1. Collect Penny Lab Report - Final Copy

1. Opening Question: Reducing Units

4. Lab Practical Prep

Wednesday, September 2nd
Lab Practical (Test) Day!
The lab practical has two parts:
1. A lab portion, where students must find the density of a new material. I will be looking for a data table to organize the data, all measurements recorded, correct sig figs, units, and actually getting close to the true density of the substance. (Minimum of 1 Trial - 25 minutes)
2. A written portion, where students read a lab scenerio and answer questions related to mistakes made in the lab process. (5 Questions - 25 minutes)

Thursday, September 3rd (Sub)
All of the science teachers are going to a conference, so there will be a guest teacher. Students will be able to choose an episode of MythBusters to watch and have a short written response.
Writing Prompt: How are the MythBusters utilizing a Scientific Method? Give examples.

1. Short Reading: "A Costly Mistake"
2. Review of Significant Figures and Scientific Notation with Practice Problems
3. If time, start expectations for formal lab reports
4. Homework: Complete practice problems, if not completed in class

Tuesday, August 25
1. Sink or Float Demo
2. Complete formal lab report expectations
3. Introduce Penny Lab
4. Choose groups and develop testing procedure
5. Homework: Formally write up procedure for approval for Wednesday

Wednesday, August 26
1. Get Penny Lab procedure approved
2. Collect Lab Data

Thursday, August 27
1. Write up Lab Report using Formal Guidelines
2. Homework: Complete Report, if not finished in class

Friday, August 28
1. Hand out and review "Super McStudent's Penny Lab Report"
2. Peer review reports and give feedback with at least 2 rotations
3. Homework: Rewrite Penny Lab Report (final copy will be graded), Due Monday

Week 1: August 13 - 14

Mr. Lawrence and I will be using the same lesson plans for the general chem classes and the chemistry class for the first unit, in order to make sure students are properly placed between the two classes. The main difference will be the level of math involved in the course. A pre-assessment of student math skills will be given on Friday, August 14th. It will be graded on participation only.
